The Hype Machine’s annual zeitgeist is out (part 1). This year they’ve done a pretty neat format. I highly recommend you go and explore this year’s offerings. It’s broken into top Artists, Albums and Songs based on posts and plays through The Hype Machine.
The Top Songs have been handed over to a few friendly remix artists to create a 30min set. I’m currently enjoying the RAC mix.
Can’t wait to see what part 2 brings!

A friend of mine posted this over on Facebook in jest. I actually found it to be a fascinating read. If you have any interest in the roots of any musical genre, I highly recommend it.

Kurt Vile - He’s Alright (live)
I’ve been listening to this guy a little bit over the last few weeks. Each time I hear another song of his, I love it. This particular track really caught my ear because the guitar rhythm sounds just like another song I’m obsessed with: Boards of Canada’s Dayvan Cowboy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrBZeWjGjl8
He’s got a new album out: Smoke Ring for my Halo. Check it out.

Mr. Little Jeans – The Suburbs (Cry Wolf Dubstep Remix)
Dont’ let the dubstep scare you. You could classify this as post-dubstep if you wanted to get overly technical. This remix is fantastic. Originally a cover of Arcade Fire’s track, it was a cool, chill and spacey tune. This remix keeps all of the elements that made the cover enjoyable, but then layers on some dubstep creepiness to it all.

Kurt Vile - The Creature
Somewhat Dylan-esq in that the vocals and rhythm seem to be disconnected from each other: each does its own thing at their own pace. The rhythm has a serious pace to it thanks to the shaker. The vocals are a bit more laid back and slower. This is a great track!

Younger Brother - Pound a Rhythm (Electronic Version)
After releasing their dramatic genre-shifting album, Vaccine, Younger Brother is in the studio remixing that album into a fully electronic version. They posted a “rough cut” of a track they’re working on. It sounds pretty darn good to me. I’m excited for the full album, and a potential tour.

Soulsavers - Kingdoms of Rain
I’d never seen the official video for this. This is one of my favorite Mark Lanegan songs - the original is on his Whiskey for the Holy Ghost album. This Soulsavers version is a bit better produced, and I personally prefer it. It’s got this great little guitar riff (2:17) which lifts up the depressing vocals a little bit.

Nine Inch Nails - Perfect Drug (Jonah Sharp Remix)
At work we’ve started having playlist competitions in order to get our internal staff to use our product more. Naturally I won the first competition :). The next competition is a Halloween themed playlist. One of the spookiest sources of music I could think of was the Lost Highway soundtrack. On that soundtrack was some amazing original pieces by the likes of Trent Reznor (one of his first “solo” tracks?), Ramstein, Marylin Manson, Smashing Pumpkins, Lou Reed, David Bowie - this soundtrack is simply fantastic. Of course, the standout single from the album was Nine Inch Nails’ “Perfect Drug”.
I was big into Nine Inch Nails back then. I had just about every “Halo” I could find. I naturally picked up the Perfect Drug remix single. I haven’t thought about it in a long time, but there were some great tracks. I accidentally came across this track just now, and I always thought it was the best. I loved how Jonah Sharp turned it into a sort-of lounge, deep house DJ mix. It flew in the face of the original and stands out on its own.
